Yesterday was the pagan cross quarter festival of Imbolc, and although I am not a pagan I think the wheel of the year is a wonderful way of marking the changing seasons and harnessing their energy. Imbolc comes at a time when the life force is bubbling under the ground ready to burst out with new growth and energy. It is a time for earth reawakening, new buds, snowdrops, the very first green shoots appearing, bringing with them the feeling of spring to come.
Its a time to clear out the old and focus on the new. A good way to do this is to write down all the things you want to get rid of…emotions, thoughts, events, on a piece of paper and let it burn in a fire, and with the burning visualise these things disappearing. Conversly, write down your hopes and dreams for the future, what you want to achieve, qualities you aspire to, changes you would like to affect. Then bury this piece of paper in the earth so it germinates and becomes one with the new growth.
Getting outside is always a good way of feeling grounded to the earth. At this time of year I like to notice the new buds appearing, snowdrops, early spring flowers, the emergence of lighter evenings, green shoots….and gather a small collection of what I find and display in my home in a favourite vase or jug.
